Jeff added (March 2009)

Congratulations to our Treasurer and Ex-Chair, Philip Ayton, who recently became the Over 60 Squash National Champion.

Ross added (February 2009):

I thought it would be nice to share the success of the Shoreham Merlin fleet at the 2008/9 Chichester Snowflake series. Shoreham boats took the top 3 places, with Kelly also taking 4th spot as crew. Richard and Tony were in 11th, just outside the top 10.

Alan added (September 2008):

A good few weeks for the Chaplin family . Alan  , crewed by Philip Ayton , were placed fourth in the Wayfarer Europeans.  Son Rowan was crowned National Champion at Bisley in the Service rifle class while Elsie followed this up by winning Third prize in the National Flower Arranging champs in Edinburgh.

Tim added (September 2008):

The Merlin Champion, Roger Gibert (Frensham Pond SC) then came to Hayling Island and won the RS200 Nationals from an entry of 141. There were gate starts and other things Jeff and I have not experienced since way, way, back in the last century at the Mirror Southerns, Hastings 1974(?). We were, however, a little disappointed to come 118th (About 100 places worse than at Hastings) after starting with a 93rd in the sort of weather we prefer to watch from the shore these days! I The Chichester bar was interesting as well...

Caroline started this by writing (August 2008):

Fireballs..
Phil Popple had a stunning 5th in the Europeans together with an equally impressive 9th in the Nationals in a fleet that numbered no less than 5 world champions and the biggest national fleet of Fireballs that Yachts and Yachting record on their website.  His best ever.  I did remind him that the 470 Gold medalist from the previous Olympics was 49 years old, so his best may still be to come!
Other results in the nationals were;

Steve Popple and Suzi Capey              59th
Nick Hurst and Ben Fjaerem               68th
Stewart Scarff and Lesley Scarff     69th
Dave Festing and Karen Festing         77th
Corrie Bell and Ben Cosh                   84th
Wendy Wood and Helen Bedford       88th

The best result for me though was that Shoreham sailing club took 7 boats all the way down to Mounts Bay and were 8% of the entire fleet!
Lesley and Stewart Scarff won the Typhoon Perseverance Trophy for being the lowest placed boat to complete all races. Not one that I would normally shout about but out of 90 entrants there were only 33 that completed all the races.

I also happen to know that John and Caz Mills won the Osprey Perseverance at their nationals.

Regarding the Merlin achievements, this year at the champs Shoreham won the team prize, i.e. the best placed 3 boats from a club. 2 boats in the top ten, Alex was 6th and Will 7th.
